Stein Tønnesson

Topic : From Bombs to Banners? Have Rebels Changed from Armed to Unarmed Tactics?

Professor Dr. Stein Tønnesson is a Norwegian peace researcher and historian. His main areas of research are Vietnam, nation building in Southeast Asia, and the disputes in the South China Sea. In 2001-2009, he was Director of Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), Norway. He has spent one year as Randolph Jennings Senior Fellow at United States Institute of Peace, Washington D.C. (2010-2011).

Since 2011, he leads a research program on the 'East Asia Peace' at Uppsala University, Sweden. He is currently Associate editor for Asia, Journal of Peace Research; and a frequent commentator in Norwegian and international media on issues of peace and conflict. His publications focusing on Conflict and Peace Studies in Asia such as Could China and Vietnam Resolve the Conflicts in the South China Sea? (in Song, Yann-huei & Keyuan Zou, eds, Major Law and Policy Issues in the South China Sea: European and American perspectives, Franham, Surrey: Ashgate, 2014, 207-233); What Is It that Best Explains the East Asian Peace Since 1979? A Call for a Research Agenda (Asian Perspective, 2009, 33(1): 111-136; The Impact of the Law of the Sea Convention on Conflict and Conflict Management in the South China Sea (Ocean Development and International Law, 2013, 44(3): 235-269).

 

Jake Lynch

Topic : Peace Journalism as a Contribution to Conflict Resolution

Associate Professor Dr. Jake Lynch is Director of the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies (CPACS) at the University of Sydney and an Executive Member of the Sydney Peace Foundation. From 2010-2012, he was Secretary General of the International Peace Research Association (IPRA).

He has spent the past dacade developing and campaigning for Peace Journalism - and practising it, as an experienced international reporter in television and newspapers.

His publications include Debates in Peace Journalism (Sydney University Press, 2008); Peace Journalism (with Annabel McGoldrick, Hawthorn Press, Stroud, UK, 2005) and refereed chapters in books including the Routledge Handbook of Peace and Conflict Studies (Oxford, 2007) and Democratising Global Media (Rowman and Littlefield, Lanham, 2005).

 

Sanjana Yajitha Hattotuwa

Topic : Between Scylla and Charybdis : Harnessing the Potential of New Media for Conflict Transformation

Sanjana Hattotuwa is currently a Senior Researcher and Head of the Media Unit at the Centre for Policy Alternatives. He is a frequent commentator on journalism and new media in domestic and international fora.

Since 2006, Sanjana is a Special Advisor to the ICT4Peace Foundation based in Geneva, Switzerland. Through the Foundation, he works to further the use of ICTs in crisis information management and peacekeeping initiative at the United Nations.

In 2010, Sanjana was the first Sri Lankan to be awarded a prestigious TED Fellowship, two years after he was awarded a News & Knowledge Entrepreneur Fellowship from the Ashoka Foundation. Both awards recognise pioneering efforts to leverage web based citizen journalism and new media to bear witness to violence and strengthen democracy, human rights and a just peace.

Sanjana is widely recognised as a vital voice in the design and implementation of ICTs and new media ecosystems in peacebuilding, online dispute resolution, conflict transformation and crisis response.
