“Sittwe”: Screening and Discussion

SEA Junction event on 6 July 2017 at 5-7 PM focuses on ethnic and religious conflict in Myanmar and possible approaches to peace. The program consists of the screening of the short documentary “Sittwe” and a follow-up discussion with the director Jeanne Hallacy and co-producer and peace activist U Myo Win of the Smile Education and Development Foundation, Yangon.

Sittwe tells about two teenagers in Burma’s Rakhine state who were displaced by communal violence in 2012: a Muslim girl named Phyu Phyu Than and a Buddhist boy named Aung Khan Myint. Interviews recorded over two years explore their ideas about education and the possibility of reconciliation. The film, in Rakhine, Bengali and Burmese with English subtitles, aims to give voice to two sides of the conflict to enable a way forwards towards peace.

The film was due to premiere in Yangon at the Human Rights, Human Dignity Film Festival but was banned by the government censors. The Asian Premier is on 5 July at FCCT and the screening at SEA Junction is the day after.
